Football brings nations together

- twin town Silkeborg participates in successful tournament -

The city of Kaiserslautern organised a football tournament for school teams at “Sportpark Rote Teufel”, Fröhnerhof within the framework of the intercultural week taking place from 24 September to 3 October 2010. More than 250 boys and girls playing in fourteen teams were at the start. It was required that at least one player should have a migration background.

Danish students coming from Silkeborg, the Danish sister city of Kaiserslautern also joined the teams. Silkeborg and Kaiserslautern are involved in a joint Comenius Regio Project supported by the European Commission. In the project with the title “Building Bridges” they work together on improving and testing integration opportunities for children and adolescents with a migration background.

During the tournament it was obvious that fair play and mutual respect were of major importance. Taking the opportunity of the award ceremony Matthias Pink, Head of the department of Sport, division Sport and Youth and Peter Krietemeyer, Head of the department of schools thanked the participants for their fair play also in the name of Joachim Färber, Councillor and Head of the Section of Schools
Peter Krietemeyer summarized: “The tournament revealed that football can cross frontiers and build bridges between people originating from different countries, having different skin colours, speaking different languages and practising different cultures and religions“. “One target of the intercultural week is to overcome the discrimination of people, offering a platform to get known to each other, to make friends and to create a common future.

The participants received a medal, donated by the “Stadtsparkasse Kaiserslautern” and a team certificate. Furthermore the Silkeborg players gave sweatshirts with the school logo of Silkeborg to the members of the team Lina-Pfaff-Realschule plus thanking them for their hospitality.
