The "flagship" of the city in good times as well as bad is the 1. FC Kaiserslautern, as up to 40,000 soccer fans attend the matches of this well-established club.
The Fritz-Walter Stadium, which has always been among the finest arenas in Germany, was renovated in the early 1990s. For the FIFA World Cup in 2006, the centerpiece of Kaiserslautern sports was expanded and now provides around 48,500 seats for spectators. The "Rote Teufel" sports park on the outskirts of the city has become a center for prospective young soccer players at the highest level.
