Since the 90's, one term expresses the development of the upper business center in Kaiserslautern - conversion. On account of the showpiece conversion project PRE-Park, which hosts companies of information and communication technology, 75 companies were established and 2,350 persons found a new employment in a very attractive location. Since 2003, the succeeding project "PRE-Uni-Park" is created on the former freight depot with an area of 17.3 acres. Here, the Fraunhofer Center of Kaiserslautern with its institutes for technological and economic mathematics (ITWM) and experimental software engineering (IESE) is settled. The German research center for artificial intelligence (DFKI) and the institute for surface and layer analysis (IFOS) will follow, which are currently under construction.
As a matter of fact, Kaiserslautern has developed to a prime location for national and international companies.
The largest employers in place are, amongst others, the companies Keiper GmbH & Co. KG, Adam Opel AG, Freudenberg & Co. KG. The County Administration as well as a satellite radio station of the Südwestrundfunk are based in Kaiserslautern.
