There was a fleet club in Kaiserslautern even before 1900. During the Second World War, the city took over the sponsorship for two submarines in the former navy which was under the command of "Lautrer boys". As a sign of the sponsorship, both submarines flew the heraldic animal of the City of Kaiserslautern, the pike, as a coat of arms.
The roots of the current sponsorship of the speedboat "Nerz" are in the marine fellowship which was founded in 1892 in Kaiserslautern. The first official visit of the German navy with the marine fellowship and the City of Kaiserslautern was in July 1972. On 22 September 1972, the sponsorship of the speedboat S74 Nerz, which then was under the command of the of Lieutenant Wilfried Stallmann who grew up in Kaiserslautern, was officially sealed. The sponsorship boat of the ZOBEL class was replaced by the "Nerz /E)" of the GEPARD class in 1983, the sponsorship was transferred without interruption and continued. Since September 2007, the "Nerz" has been under the command of lieutenant commander Olliver Pfennig and belongs to the seventh speedboat squadron. This includes ten boats which all have a sponsorship in the Federal Republic of Germany.

A close friendship has bound the boat and the City of Kaiserslautern since the beginning of the sponsorship. This has lead to numerous contacts which exceed the official ones.
